Ninja lanternshark on Wetpixel

Researchers have discovered a new species of lanternshark. Etmopterus benchleyi or the ninja lanternshark has been described in a paper (pdf) published in the Journal of the Ocean Science Foundation. It is found at great depths in the central eastern Pacific, and have tiny bioluminescent dots all over their bodies. These are believed to act as camoflage while the animal is hunting.

Unique attributes for the new species include: photophores (light emitting organs), two dorsal fins with a spine on each one, and dignathic heterodonty (upper teeth and lower teeth arrangements are different).
