Photographer Angel M. Fitor posted this poignant picture of a stingray caught as bycatch by a bottom trawler. Due to poorly implemented quota regulations, European fisherman discard around 60% of their catch, the vast majority of which are killed in the process. Angel says:

“After being swallowed by the huge jaws of a bottom trawler, a stingray languish on deck as part of the by catch. Although Mediterranean stingray populations are not included in any threatened species catalogue, a wise man once told me; “the real drama of extinction, doesn’t really lie on the loss of a species itself, but on the vanishing of each and every of their individuals”.”
