Photo documentary for the Great Turtle Race

Jason Bradley wrote in last week to let us know that he has posted images from a recent trip to Playa Grande, Costa Rica, to document Leatherback turtle research. His images are being used in part for the Great Turtle Race, a unique conservation effort that tracks turtles as they leave their nesting areas and “race” toward feeding areas south of the Galapagos Islands.

The Great Turtle Race is currently on day 7, and is well worth checking out!

DivePhotoFest is proud to announce their first photo competition, which is open to all contestants and has a macro theme (no wide angle images accepted).

An interview with National Geographic Magazine photographer Brian Skerry is scheduled to be included in a Special ABC 20/20 news program with Diane Sawyer, Friday April 20th 10:00PM EDT (please check local listings).

This segment of 20/20, about endangered animals, is being reported by Elizabeth Vargas and will be part of network-wide coverage planned for Earth Day. Brian will discuss issues relating to his NGM cover story on the global fisheries crisis (April 2007). In addition to 20/20, portions of his interview may also appear that day on Good Morning America, ABC World News with Charles Gibson and Nightline.

Gates Underwater Products has released the new EM43 external color monitor, a 4.3” HD-ready LCD for use with Gates housings.

The unit is rated to a depth of 450 feet, has a two-year warranty, and runs on 8AA batteries for up to 14 hours. It currently supports HD 1080i/720p resolution for new Gates housings (and SD for all current housings, with the possibility of a retrofit). Pricing information should become available soon.

Marin County Fair underwater photography competition

Celebrating this year’s theme of “Aquatic Adventures,” the 2007 Marin County Fair (located in San Rafael, CA) has announced an underwater photography competition. Only images taken along the California coastline are eligible for the separate print and digital categories, and the deadline for entry forms is May 17, 2007 (with the actual entries due June 14).

The Best of Show in each category will receive $200 and a rosette, and first place earns $100. This 62nd anniversary of the fair also features land-based photography categories and a variety of other contests and competitions, and will be held from June 30 - July 4, 2007.
