It is the beginning of a new year and it is worth preparing a few things before shooting in 2016. Whilst many devices will update automatically to the new year, many metadata presets within image processing and import apps need to be manually updated to incorporate the the date change. Similarly, if you have comments set up in your camera, these will need updating
Tokina announces 14-20mm f2 lens
Tokina has announced a new APS-C rectilinear wide angle zoom lens. The 14-20 F2 Pro DX offer a maximum aperture of f2 at all focal lengths, internal focusing and a minimum focus distance of 0,28m. Quite how this will work behind a dome port remains to be seen but if it works, it is an interesting alternative.
Giant squid filmed in shallow water in Japan
On Christmas Eve a giant squid, Architeuthis dux, ventured into Japan’s Toyama Bay and swam beneath a pier full of observers. The 12-foot long squid stayed in the bay for several hours, giving diver Akinobu Kimura the chance to suit up and film the elusive creature underwater.
Wetpixel Guide: Your new housing
Wetpixel Editor Adam Hanlon provides some guidance and critical steps for those fortunate enough to have received new camera and housing systems over the holiday period. Whilst new normally means waterproof, there are few checks and set up steps that are worth performing before the system gets used for its first real dive.
New species of lanternshark described
Researchers have discovered a new species of lanternshark. Etmopterus benchleyi or the ninja lanternshark has been described in a paper (pdf) published in the Journal of the Ocean Science Foundation. It is found at great depths in the central eastern Pacific, and have tiny bioluminescent dots all over their bodies.
Borneo From Below: Shark Special
Episode 20 of Borneo from Below has now been released. This week features a Borneo Shark Special. Sharks are part of the draw to Borneo for divers, but their populations worldwide are in peril. Bertie investigates what is being done to save them.
Report: Silence of the Sharks
The first Silence of the Sharks protest dive was held in the Red Sea resort of Eilat, Israel. 87 divers dived together on the wreck of the Satil to protest the against shark finning and to raise awareness of the plight of sharks in the marine ecosystem. Further protests are planned around the globe, including a dive with 500 divers in the Mediterranean in October 2016.
Ikelite is shipping housing for Sony Alpha a7 II, a7R II, a7S II
Ikelite has announced the release of their housing for the Sony a7 II, a7R II, a7S II cameras. Ikelite has managed to incorporate TTL flash syncing. Constructed from the new grey polycarbonate announced at DEMA, the housing mimics the control placements on the camera wherever possible.
